Stages of Floor Sanding Process:
The main floor sanding stage is further divided into sub-stages, which are discussed below in detail.
The preparation in this process involves removing all the undesirable items like pins, tacks, or staples from the floor to make it ready for sanding. Doing this is necessary as these items may cause potential damage to the advanced machinery during the process. After removing all of these, nails are manually punched or through a nail punch machine according to the methods employed in the prior installation procedures.
Filling Gaps and then sanding again
After performing the sanding steps, all the gaps, minor holes, and cracks are filled with wood fillers or putty. After filling, some time is given to the floor to set the fillers in it and then wait until the filling dries. Now, the floor is sanded again to get the desired smoothness and a disc is applied to it to make the surface ready for coating.

Cleaning the floors/ surfaces

Floor Coating
In the past, oil-based polyurethane coating materials were commonly used but in the recent years, water-based polyurethanes have shown a significant increase in their popularity. These coating materials are not only safe to use but are also durable. Water-based polyurethanes have low volatile organic compounds and are environment friendly, with no emission of toxic fumes.
Additionally, water-based polyurethanes have a very low drying time as compared to the oil-based polyurethanes, with full drying in 24 hours. Therefore, our experts at Cleaning Tech preferably recommend water-based polyurethanes for floor coating purposes.
Application of Coats
This is the crucial step in the coating process that needs extra care to prevent any kind of contamination, that may potentially cause damage to the floor. Even the minor dust particles pose a risk to the wooden surface. Cleaning Tech’s advanced floor sanding machinery is specifically designed to minimize the adherence of dust and dirt to the floor during the sanding process. After sanding, the floor is cleaned by vacuuming and wiping the surface using a damp microfiber cloth, to remove any residual wood dust, dirt, and debris.
After cleaning, the floor is left to dry fully before coating. We apply 3 coats of water-based polyurethane coating after preparing the floors/ surfaces of which each coat requires at least 3 to 6 hours to dry completely. It is recommended to keep the area free of any visitors or foot traffic for a minimum of 24 hours because walking on the wet area will cause damage to the coating or finishing. Also, this will leave the marks and dust on the surface, which are always challenging to remove.
When the previous coat is dried, then the second and third coat is applied on the surface of the floors. It typically takes 3 full days for polyurethane coating to get dried and solidified.

Installing back furniture and rugs
If you want an extended lifespan for your floors then do not put furniture or heavy items on the floor for at least 7 days. If it is not possible then wait for a minimum of 48 hours because dragging heavy items on newly varnished floors will result in scratches and scrapes that will be difficult to remove. Likewise, carpets should not be returned back to their previous location for at least 7 days.
